A photoshoot at the Temple of Apollo in Side
The columns of the Temple of Apollo by the sea are the most recognisable shot on the whole coast, which is why it gets busy at sunset. Here's how to get beautiful photos without strangers in the frame.
Why the Temple of Apollo
A few surviving columns with a carved frieze stand at the tip of the peninsula, right by the water. In the evening the sun sets into the sea behind them and the pale stone turns gold. You can't get this shot anywhere else on the coast.
Where the Temple of Apollo is
The temple stands at the very tip of the old Side peninsula, by the water, a few minutes' walk from the harbour and the ancient main street. The remains of the Temple of Athena are right next to it, which is why the site is often called the temples of Apollo and Athena. It's easiest to walk there from the old town entrance.
When to go
- Sunrise: almost nobody around, soft light, calm sea. The best option if you can get up early.
- 40–60 minutes before sunset: warm light and the crowd hasn't peaked yet.
- Sunset itself: the most beautiful and the busiest. We use angles where the crowd isn't visible.
I pick the time for your date and know the angles where the columns show without people behind them. If a completely empty frame matters to you, choose sunrise.
What to wear
Pale stone and sea water love white, powder pink, gold and terracotta. A flowy dress looks especially striking here: the sea breeze does all the work. For men, light linen shirts and trousers work well.
- Avoid grey and beige that match the stone exactly: you'll blend into the background.
- The ground around the temple is uneven and rocky, so wear comfortable shoes to get there.
What else to shoot in Side
- The ancient colonnaded street: we walk along it to the temple for photos in motion.
- The ancient theatre: stone rows and arches in warm evening light. Entry is ticketed; check the opening hours in advance.
- Side harbour: boats and the promenade, great for couples.
- East beach: a long sandy beach, easy for families with kids.
How to plan the shoot
- 1 hour (€79): the Temple of Apollo and the promenade nearby.
- 2 hours (€129): the colonnaded street, the harbour and sunset at the temple, or an outfit change.
We meet at the old town entrance or at your hotel in Side, Kolaklı or Çolaklı. Send me your date and I'll give you the exact start time for that day's sunset. More on the photographer in Side page.
